Before becoming president of France in 1981, he held several high-ranking government positions, including Minister of State, Minister of the Interior and Minister of Justice.
At various points in his political career, he has been affiliated with the Democratic and Socialist Union of the Resistance (UDSR), the Convention of the Republican Party (CIR) and the Socialist Party. After attending Saint-Paul University, he graduated from Paris' Ecole Libre des Sciences Politiques. His first political appointment (in late 1940) was as Minister of Veterans Affairs and Victims of War.
He and his seven siblings were raised in a devout Catholic family in Jarnac, France. His marriage to Danielle Mitterrand Gouze resulted in sons named Pascal, Jean-Christophe, and Gilbert; he had two additional children through work with Anne Pingeot and Christina Forsne.
