Former General in the Nigerian military who served as President of Nigeria from 1999 to 2007. He is the first elected and civilian of the state in the country's history after more than a decade of military rule.
Before becoming President, he was an opponent of what he viewed as the grave human rights abuses of dictator Sani Abacha and was jailed for participating in a failed coup.
