Best known for his 2009 album La The Difference, which documents the struggles faced by people born with albinism, he is also known for many other popular Afro-pop albums, including Ko -Yan (1989); Amen (1991); Folon (1995); and Moffou (2002).
His music was featured at a 1988 Concert Seventieth Birthday Tribute for Nelson Mandela.

Early in his career, he was a member of an Afro-Latin Mali-based musical group called the Rail Band (or Super Railroad de Bamako). He then joined a popular band, Les Ambassadeurs.
A native of Djoliba, Mali, and a descendant of Mali's first emperor Sundiata Keita, Salif Keita abandoned his family at a young age as a result of his albinism. He later fathered a blind daughter, Nantenin Keita, who competed in the 2008 and 2012 Paralympic Games, winning silver and bronze medals in athletics events.
