He attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison, although he left before obtaining a degree. While there, he became a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity. He moved to Chicago after his time at university, which is still reeling from the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 and the necessary developers. He worked as a draftsman for the renowned architectural firm Joseph Lyman Silsbee.
His parents were William Carey Wright and Anna Lloyd Jones; they were living in Richland Center, Wisconsin, a farming community, when he was born. His father had been a Baptist minister who later joined the Unitarian faith; he is a man of many talents. His mother was a county high school teacher who was born into the wealthy Lloyd Jones clan. Her brother, Jenkins Lloyd Jones, was a prominent Unitarian who lost faith out of the West. Frank was married three times, first to Catherine Wright, then to Miriam Wright, then finally to Olgivanna Wright.
