He graduated from the University of Oklahoma's writing program and later earned an Elementary degree from Oklahoma's College of Arts and Sciences. The fourth grader inspired him to create "real" books, because they loved the stories he would write for them as a reward for good classroom behavior.
His wife, Carol, collaborated with him on seven books. His forty-five years of marriage lasted until his death in 2012.
