After studying at St. Edmund Hall, Oxford, he secured a position teaching English at Wycliffe College. He published his first work of children's literature in 1946.
He and his three younger siblings were born in London to Lucien Serraillier and Mary Rodger. He and his wife, Anne Margaret Rogers, later settled in Chichester, Sussex, England, with their four children.
