Because the family was poor since childhood, he had to work to help his parents, when he was in 6th grade he sold ice cream, when he was in high school and during college summer vacation, he carried bricks for hire. While in Hanoi studying for exams and studying at university, Chien Thang also applied for paving stones, tombstone carving, statue making, painting, etc.
He majored in vocal music at the Military College of Culture and Arts (now the Military College of Culture and Arts) and graduated in 1998.
