Musician Van Cao Van graduated from elementary school at Bonnal School, and attended high school at Saint Josef School.
When he was 15 years old, his family's economy declined, so he had to drop out of school at the end of his second year of loyalty. He worked as a telephone operator at the Post Office in Hai Phong, but quit after a month.
During a trip to the South in 1940, while in Hue, Van Cao wrote his first poem "A night of piano playing". cold on Hue river".

After the August Revolution, musician Van Cao returned to work as a reporter for Lao newspaper.

After that, he was invited to join the Cultural Association for National Salvation and was elected as an Executive Member, Van Cao worked in Inter-zone III, was in charge of the inter-regional police investigation team and wrote the Doc Lap newspaper.
At the end of 1949, he quit his job at Van Nghe newspaper and moved to be in charge of the Vietnam Musicians Union.

In 1947, musician Van Cao married Mrs. Nghiem Thuy Bang. They have 5 children together, the first 3 boys and the last 2 girls.
