After finishing primary school at Hang Voi School, Vu Trong Phung had to drop out of school to work to earn a living and support his family.

On January 23, 1939, Vu Trong Phung married Mrs. Vu My Luong, commonly known as Mrs. Gai. He and his wife gave birth to a daughter, Vu My Hang. Until his death, Mrs. Vu My Nuong - his wife had to work hard all her life to support her mother-in-law and young daughter.
