Director Toni Duong Bao Anh: Journey from cascadeur to director of hundreds of billions
Toni Duong Bao Anh is a director with hundreds of billions of dollars "chasing" directors Tran Thanh and Dang Thai Huyen. Human Trafficking Camp is his first movie, reaching the 100 billion VND mark after about three and a half days of release. Before Human Trafficking Camp, director Toni directed the series Hung Long Phong Ba.
Toni Duong Bao Anh once took on the role of deputy director for director Cuong Ngo in Huong Ga (2014), and also had time to work with director Le Thanh Son and Ly Hai through parts 1 to 8 of the series Face Off. The years behind the projects of experienced directors became a valuable time for Toni to accumulate and perfect her filmmaking thinking.
From director Ly Hai, Toni Duong Bao Anh learned how to exploit emotional and family elements, especially through building the image of a mother. With director Le Thanh Son, Toni observed how to cut and handle situations on screen. Meanwhile, the imprint of director Cuong Ngo helps him approach aesthetic image thinking, focusing on each frame.
From childhood in Khanh Hoa to the first days of entering the profession
Toni Duong Bao Anh was born and raised in Khanh Hoa. His parents broke up, he spent time living at a temple and was exposed to martial arts from a young age.
When he grew up, he left the temple and continued his studies. In 2005, Toni moved to Ho Chi Minh City to pursue her studies and seek career opportunities.
Initially, he studied Industrial Fine Arts, majoring in Interior and Exterior Decoration. While studying, he joined the cascadeur club headed by Quoc Thinh. Practice sessions that require perseverance and diligence have helped Toni Duong Bao Anh gradually improve her physical strength, skills and get used to the performance environment. After only about six months, he got his first job as a circus performer. One time, he put on a clown costume and performed on stilts in front of the Zoo gate for two hours and received 80,000 VND as salary. It was a modest income, but also one of the first milestones on his journey into the artistic path.
From a student of industrial arts, Toni gradually turned to performing arts, martial arts, stunts and cinema. Each job becomes a step in accumulating experience for the journey ahead.
Cinema studies and opportunities in Bollywood
After working as a stuntman, Toni continued to study at Ho Chi Minh City University of Theater and Cinema. A big turning point in his career came when he met director Peter Hien, an Indian director of Vietnamese origin. Peter Hien mentored and created opportunities for Toni to work in many countries, including India, Thailand and Australia. Here, Toni takes on a job related to an action director's assistant.
In particular, about 10 years of working in India helped him come into contact with a large-scale film production system and a unique action staging style.
Toni learned many professional skills such as designing flying wires, staging battles, training actors and assembling action cards for actors before entering the studio.
This was also the period when he had the opportunity to participate in major Indian film projects, including Epic Baahubali part one and part two.
