Born Martin Christopher Kennedy, he grew up in Belfast, Northern Ireland, during a period of political turmoil known as The Troubles. He is the son of Jim and Lily Kennedy; brother of fellow singer and songwriter Brian Kennedy; Brenda Boyd's husband; and stepfather of Kenneth Hall and Christine Elliott.
