Who is Suspect Nguyen Anh Tuan?
Nguyen Anh Tuan, former Deputy Director of Hanoi Public Security, is one of the four defendants involved in the case of "running a case" of more than 61 billion VND. The remaining three defendants in this case are Hoang Van Hung - former Head of Division 5 (Department of Security and Investigation - Ministry of Public Security), former principal investigator in charge of the "rescue flight" case; Le Hong Son, former General Director of Bluesky Company; Nguyen Thi Thanh Hang, former Deputy General Director of Bluesky Company. Defendant Nguyen Anh Tuan was prosecuted for the crime of Bribery broker with the charge: "From January 2022 to December 2022, he received 2.65 million USD (more than 61.9 billion VND) from Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh Hang to run the sentence". On January 12, 2023, the Central Committee for Inspection of the Communist Party Vietnam decided to discipline Nguyen Anh Tuan in the form of expulsion from the Party. After more than a week of being prosecuted, defendant Nguyen Anh Tuan was stripped of the rank of major general by the President.

From the time of his arrest, defendant Nguyen Anh Tuan had an opinion in writing that he did not cheat to appropriate property. The defendant's receipt of money from defendants Hang and Son gave to defendant Hung for the purpose of helping Hang and Son not be prosecuted. Defendant Tuan said that he came from love and trust in people, so he "committed a very painful crime".
Defendant Nguyen Anh Tuan's family has paid to remedy all consequences with the amount of 1.85 million USD. Therefore, the Procuracy proposed to reduce the sentence for defendant Tuan to 5-6 years in prison (the old level was 6-7 years in prison). Defendant Tuan said he was suffering from a serious illness. At the end of 2021, the defendant suffered from esophageal cancer and had endoscopic surgery, so he asked the Trial Panel to consider a lower sentence than that proposed by the Procuracy. Defendant Tuan also asked to return $210,000, 146 pieces of gold and cancel the order to block a 1 billion dong account in the bank for the defendant's family.
During the investigation as well as at the trial, defendant Tuan admitted to the behavior as indicted by the Procuracy, which defendant Hung did not admit. Part of the conflicting testimony related to 450,000 USD "running the sentence" for defendants Son and Hang, defendant Tuan said that he had put money in a briefcase with code 104 and then asked someone to give it to defendant Hung at the gate of the headquarters of the Investigation Security Agency. The People's Procuracy has released a clip of defendant Tuan's driver giving Hung a briefcase that is believed to contain $450,000. However, defendant Hung insisted that there were only 4 bottles of wine inside, not money. In this case, defendants Tuan, Hang and Son all had the same testimonies, there was no consistent and objective discussion. Therefore, the People's Procuracy used the testimony of the three defendants to prove the behavior of defendant Hung.
Defendant Nguyen Anh Tuan has many years working at the Hanoi Police. In 2015, when he was the Chief of Police of Tay Ho District, Nguyen Anh Tuan was appointed Deputy Director of Hanoi Public Security, in charge of the security division and Head of the Investigation Security Agency. At the end of March 2022, Nguyen Anh Tuan retired from work, waiting to enjoy the retirement regime.
