- 1992 National Cup Runner-up After taking a break, Nguyen Hong Son became a football coach to lead Thanh Nghia Football Club - Quang Ngai, then the U15 team of The Cong. At the 2007 Southeast Asian Games, he worked as the deputy coach of the Vietnam national futsal team.
In 1988 Nguyen Hong Son joined the Military Club (also known as The Cong) and started playing for the national team in 1993. Initially, Hong Son played as a striker and then switched to a winger. Hong Son won the title of top scorer at the national championship in 1990. He had won silver medals at SEA Games 18,20 and Tiger Cup 1998 and bronze medals at Tiger Cup 1996 and SEA Games 19.
In 1998, after receiving the award "The best player in the Tiger Cup", Nguyen Hong Son was awarded the title of the best player in Asia in August 1998 and the "Vietnam Golden Ball" for the first time. In 1999, he finished 2nd in the soccer tournament organized by Pepsi (This tournament includes many famous players such as David Beckham, Yorke, Ruis Cósta, Roberto Carlos,... ) In early 2001, he won title "Vietnam Golden Ball" for the second time.
