Who is Journalist Dam Phuong?
Dam Phuong real name Ton Nu Dong Canh, she is a famous Vietnamese journalist, poet, and cultural activist in the early twentieth century. She was also the first female journalist and was considered the leading writer of the Vietnamese press industry at that time.
Since 1918, she has been active in the field of journalism. Her first article was published in Nam Phong (Hanoi) in July 1918. Within 10 years she wrote more than 200 articles for newspapers such as Trung Bac Tan Van, Thuong Khoi Dan Bao, Huu Thanh, Luc Province Tan Van - Compared to that time, it was a massive journalistic career.
Besides a journalist, she also works as an assistant writer and editor for women's columns. She was the founder of the Women's Tung San newspaper (1929), which gathered the voices of women in Hue during the feudal and French colonial period. She founded and operated the Women's Congregation (1926) - Vietnam's first women's organization with its own principles, charter, headquarters, leadership, and separate accounts to help women learn a profession and progress together. In 1926, she participated in the founding and was the President of the Hue Women's Study Association, the first private educational institution in Vietnam for girls.
However, 2 years later she was imprisoned by the French colonialists because she was suspected of being related to the Tan Viet Party.
Since then, she stopped writing newspapers, her pen was missing on the pages.
