As a child, Mathews attended Hillsdale High School in San Mateo, California, later attending both Occidental College and Harvard University. He is a veteran who served in the Vietnam War.
In 1971, Mathews started working at the Washington Post where he was responsible for writing news articles and stories. about China, disability, stock market, and education.
He has been a writer for The Washington Post's "America's Most Challenging High Schools in the World" annual ranking (and before that for Newsweek) for 18 years. He is also a teacher of advanced math courses for difficult graduate students at Garfield High School - a public high school in Seattle, Washington, USA.
