She interned at the Atlanta Journal after earning her BA in Journalism from Georgia State University in 1976.
Shipp attended JP Carr School in 1968, she transferred to Rockdale County High where she was one of the students. The first black student attended and graduated from this school in 1972. While still in high school, Shipp got a part-time job, where she began working as an economist reporter for a local newspaper.
In 1976, Shipp graduated from Georgia State University with a bachelor's degree in journalism and interned at the Atlanta Journal. She then moved to New York City and graduated from Columbia University.
In 1980, she started working for the New York Times where she worked for 13 years until 1993 in a role is a reporter and editor. In 1993, she left the Times to pursue graduate work, she won an art course in 1994 and wrote a doctoral thesis on the relationship between slaves and former slave owners in rural Georgia. Simultaneously, she also became an assistant professor at Columbia University School of Journalism and a faculty member of the Bronx Beat academic publication.
In 1994, Shipp began writing for the New York Daily News. From 1998 to 2000, Shipp served as an inspector at the Washington Post, where she was responsible for discussing article policies and editorial decisions
In 2005, Shipp left Columbia and became Professor Lawrence Stessin Journalism at Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York.
