Most remembered as a journalist, editor, and publisher with the Tennessean Nashville newspaper, this one-time president of the American Association of Newspaper Editors also worked throughout the 1960s as an assistant politician Robert F. Kennedy.
In the mid-1970s, he encouraged future United States Vice President Al Gore, a family friend and newspaper colleague, to pursue a career in politics.

His marriage to Dolores Watson lasted from 1955 until his death in 2014 and resulted in a son, John Michael Seigenthaler, who had a career as a news anchor.
