Preston was born into a Roman Catholic family and from the age of 12 was educated in Sussex at the Worth School, a Benedictine boarding school. He graduated from the University of Kent with an honors degree BA in Politics and Government. In the late 1970's he became a DJ and rock musician.
In 1993, he moved to AUSTRALIA and worked at City Limits and IPC magazine on programs such as TV Times and What's On TV. There he worked as a television reporter while also writing a number of trade publications on Encore, Supermarket News and Counterpoint.
In 1996, Matt Preston began writing review articles for a new Melbourne magazine. , then in February 2000 he switched to writing reviews for The Age.
Preston also works as a food reporter regularly covering the Herald Sun, The Courier-Mail and the Daily newspapers. Telegraph (Australia), MasterChef Magazine, delicious, Australian Good Taste as the drink reviewer, The Guardian newspaper (UK) and Time Out (London). Preston was also a contributor to Epicure's weekly review articles from 2000 to 2009. He was a senior editor for Vogue Entertaining & Travel, Delicios magazine, and Taste magazine. com. au. Preston has made several appearances on Australian radio.
