He was his high school valedictorian in 1984, and he received an athletics scholarship to the University of Notre Dame. After his college graduation, he worked a string of odd jobs, including real estate agent and waiter.
He and his two siblings were born in Nebraska to business professor Patrick Sparks and homemaker Jill Thoene Sparks. He met his future wife, Cathy Cote, in 1988, and the couple became parents to children before separating in early 2015.
