An American novelist, he is best known for America by Land; A Trail of Blood Heart Wherever We Go; Beverage; and Black Horse coal. He received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1989.
His 2007 novel, Than Black Horse, won both the Heartland Tribune Chicago Prize for Fiction and the Ohioana Book Award for Fiction.
