Sociologist and cultural theorist whose influential works include Hard Road to Innovation (1988), Formations of Modernity (1992), and Questions of Cultural Identity (1996). He is also the founder of The Birmingham School of Cultural Studies and a regular contributor to the leftist, Marxist magazine Today.
He served as president of the British Sociological Association in the late 1990s.

He began his college career at Jamaica College and later attended Oxford on a Rhodes scholarship. In 1979, he began teaching sociology at the Open University.
