He trained first at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in his native Philadelphia, and then at Paris' famous Julian Academie. His first successful painting was a 1902 piece titled Broad Street, New York.
His first marriage, to fellow painter Emma Lampert, lasted from 1897 until Lampert's 1920 death of tuberculosis. Nearly a decade later, he met and married Marie Henriette Frehsee and settled in Santa Barbara, California.
