The architect of the Wainwright Building in Missouri became a pioneer in modern architecture and created modern skyscrapers. He is known as the father of the skyscraper and the father of modernism. He was also prominent in the Chicago schools.
He was the first to bring about a high aesthetic beauty, slender structure, while earlier architectural styles reflected, wide receding architecture.

He worked at a Chicago architecture firm after studying at MIT, helping to rebuild after the great Chicago Fire of 1871. He then studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris for a year. He began as a theater architect, with the 1889 Auditorium as his standout project.
