People's Artist The Anh studied at Lycée Albert Sarraut, Khai Thanh Private School, Minh Tan, Hoang Huu Nam. After graduating from high school, he worked at the Military High School for 2 years. In 1961, he was admitted to the Faculty of Mathematics, Hanoi National University of Education. Only 4 months into the school, he enrolled and passed the acting class of the School of Dramatic Art. Graduated with honors from the first regular theater actor course in 1964 with the role of an American officer trapped in a bunker in the play Black Night.
He married his wife, an actress Thu Hang, they gave birth to two sons and named them The Phuong and The Duy (named after two of his most impressive roles).
