African-American poet, critic, and playwright known for works such as The People's Blues: Negro Music in White America (fiction), Dante Hell's System (novel), A Black Mass (drama) ), and Slave Ship (poetry). He was the New Jersey Prize-winning poet from 2002 to 2003.
His 2006 fiction work, Tales of the Out and Gone, received the PEN Open Book Award in 2008.
