Born in Nicaragua to Blanca Ultrecht Aviles and politician Manuel Coronel Matus, he spent a large part of his youth in San Francisco, California. He published his first literary works in the Nicaraguan daily press in the late 1920s.
He dedicated many of his poems, including "Lumber Moon" and "Love Song for Autumn," to his wife, Maria Kautz Gross. He and his family raised seven children, one of whom died of childhood cancer, and one of which disappeared while attending the University of Frankfurt in the 1960s.
