Pham Van Dong was the first prime minister of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. He held the position of prime minister from 1976 to 1987. Before that, he served as Prime Minister of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam for 21 years, from 1955 to 1976. He is considered the prime minister of Vietnam. In 1940, he and Vo Nguyen Giap secretly went to China to join the Indochinese Communist Party. and was assigned by Ho Chi Minh to build a base base at the Vietnam-China border. In 1945, he became a member of the Standing Committee at the National Congress of Tan Trao, including 5 members of the Committee for Ethnic Liberation to prepare for the August Revolution.
On August 16, 1945, after the establishment of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, he was elected Minister of Finance. However, he had many important jobs in the field of diplomacy. On March 2, 1946, in Hanoi, he became Deputy Head of the Standing Committee of the National Assembly, term I.
During the war Indochina broke out, he was sent as the Special Envoy of the Party Central Committee and the government in the South. After that, he was appointed as an alternate member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Indochina. In July 1949, he was appointed as the only Deputy Prime Minister. In 1951, he was a member of the Politburo of the Party Central Committee at the Second Congress of the Indochinese Communist Party/Vietnam Workers' Party.
He was the Head of the Government Delegation to the Geneva Conference. on Indochina was held in 1954. The contributions of the Vietnamese delegation when he was at the head were extremely great, creating breakthroughs, bringing the Conference to great success. The conference went through 8 plenary sessions, with 23 sessions in a tense and complicated atmosphere, but with the proactive spirit and best efforts of the Vietnamese delegation, the agreement to cease hostilities in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia were signed on July 20, 1954, which acknowledged respect for the independence and sovereignty of three countries Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos.
September 1954, Pham Van Dong kept Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, and Head of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Party Central Committee. He was a member of the National Assembly from 1946 until his retirement in 1987. From 1986 to 1997, he was an Advisor to the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam. In September 1990, he and Prime Minister Do Muoi and General Secretary Nguyen Van Linh attended the meeting. informal meeting with the Chinese leadership in Chengdu, with the aim of normalizing Vietnam-China relations after more than 10 years of intense conflict.
Pham Van Dong was awarded the Medal of Honor. Gold Star of the State of Vietnam and many medals of many other countries such as: Poland, Soviet Union, Cambodia, Laos, Bulgaria, Mongolia, Cuba...
He passed away on April 29. /2000 due to old age, weakness and illness. In memory of the great leader of the nation, his name has been given to many roads in major cities and provinces in the country such as: Hanoi, City. Ho Chi Minh, Da Nang, Hai Phong, Nha Trang...
