Artist Nam Chau attended high school at My tho High School. During the summer vacation of the second year, he went to Phu Quoc to visit his father. Because of the storm, he returned to the mainland late and was late for class. He was expelled from the school and his scholarship was cut. He was asked by his family to attend Taberd Saigon School, but he decided to become independent.
In 1922, he joined the singing troupe of Thay Nam Tu in My tho, deciding to pursue a career in singing.

In 1929, Nam Chau and Phung Ha joined the Huynh Ky singing troupe of Mr. Bau Phuoc Georges or Bach Cong Tu.
