Democratic politician, United States Senator (1969-1975), and Governor of Iowa (1963-1969). An alcoholic, he established an Iowa alcohol treatment program during his tenure as governor and alcohol control legislation was also supported.
Before beginning his political career, he worked in a capacity management for a trucking company and went on to establish the Iowa Better Trucking Department.
