President1 Nicolas Maduro profile

Who is President1 Nicolas Maduro?

Nicolas Maduro took office as President of Venezuela in 2013. He is one of the most controversial faces in Latin American politics today. Coming from a working-class background, having worked for many years as a subway driver and participating in union activities, Mr. Maduro has gradually risen to the pinnacle of power, succeeding late President Hugo Chavez. However, President Nicolas Maduro's journey to power is also accompanied by international sanctions, severe tensions with the US and unprecedented legal developments in the region's history.

President Nicolas Maduro is considered one of the founders of the Fifth Republic Movement (Movimiento V República - MVR), a political organization that played an important role in bringing Hugo Chavez to power.

One of the big marks in President Nicolas Maduro's early political career was his participation in campaign activities to rescue Mr. Hugo Chavez from prison, after the failed coup in the period 1992-1998 to overthrow then-President Carlos Andrés Pérez. After that, Mr. Maduro continued to be the regional coordinator in Chavez's 1998 Presidential campaign.

In 1998, Mr. Maduro was elected Senator of Venezuela as a representative for MVR. Just one year later, he became a delegate to the Constituent Assembly in 1999, contributing to building a new political foundation for the country.

In 2000 and 2005, Mr. Nicolas Maduro continued to be elected as a National Assembly delegate, representing the capital region of Caracas. Notably, from 2005 to mid-2006, he held the position of President of the Venezuelan National Assembly, despite not having a high school diploma.

On August 9, 2006, President Hugo Chavez appointed Mr. Maduro as Minister of Foreign Affairs. In this position, he impressed the image of a politician with a flexible style: willing to dialogue with allies but showing a tough attitude towards political opponents and outside forces.

In April 2013, Maduro was elected president after defeating opposition candidate Henrique Capriles with a slim margin of only 1.5%. Maduro was still sworn in on April 19.

On January 10, 2025, President Nicolas Maduro continued to be sworn in for a third 6-year term. This event took place in the context of him facing a wave of protests from a number of countries and international organizations, with accusations related to election fraud and opposition repression.

The presidency and international sanctions pressure

During his time in power, President Nicolas Maduro's government continuously faced strict sanctions from the US and many Western countries, mainly related to the economy. economy, oil and human rights issues.

By 2020, the Washington government prosecuted Mr. Maduro on charges related to corruption and many other serious crimes. Before these moves, President Nicolas Maduro repeatedly denied all accusations, saying that this was a political action and interference in Venezuela's internal affairs.

Sworn in for a third term and shocking events

In January 2025, President Nicolas Maduro was sworn in for a third term. However, just one year later, the political situation suddenly escalated in tension.

According to information from the US, Mr. Maduro was arrested by US forces in a lightning attack on the capital Caracas. Washington said Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro will be brought back to the US for investigation and trial.

Hearing in New York and attention-grabbing statement

On January 5, 2025, two days after his arrest, President Nicolas Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores appeared in a court in New York to attend the first hearing.

The trial lasted about 30 minutes, presided over by Judge Alvin K. Hellerstein (92 years old). The judge emphasized the court's role in ensuring fair and transparent proceedings.

  • Lawyer defending Mr. Maduro: Barry Pollack

  • Lawyer representing Ms. Cilia Flores: Mark Donnelly

When asked to confirm his identity, Mr. Maduro responded in Spanish, claiming to be the President of Venezuela and said he was here because he was "kidnapped" from private home in Caracas.

Facing four criminal charges, he declared in court: "I am innocent. I am not guilty. I am a decent person. I am still the president of my country."

As he left the courtroom, President Nicolas Maduro continued to say: "I am a prisoner of war." Judge Hellerstein announced that the next hearing will take place on March 17, 2025. After that, the defendants were led out of the courtroom, closing the first trial of a case that is attracting special attention from international public opinion.
