He is one of the founders of the field of behavioral finance, studying how the limits of thought and reason can affect financial markets. Mr. Thaler developed a theory of "mental accounting", or limited rational thinking in which people often simplify financial decisions by dividing their money into imaginary accounts in his head and focused on limiting the impact of each single decision, rather than taking into account the overall impact on the entire sum.
