In 1942, Nguyen Canh Toan enrolled at Quoc Hoc Hue School of Mathematics. After that, he graduated with a baccalaureate degree in 1944. In 1946, after taking the general mathematics exam, he became Thu Khoa and became a math teacher for the Specialized High School Huynh Thuc Khang in 1947. In 1951, he was assigned by the Vietnamese Ministry of Education to teach at a university in the Central Campus of Nanning, China. After that, he became a math lecturer at Hanoi University of Science in 1954. In 1957, he was one of the first university lecturers to go to the Soviet Union to work as an intern, he defended. completed the PhD thesis in 1959 at Lomonosov University. That same year, he returned to Vietnam and continued to teach mathematics and research on scientific topics on geometry. In June 1963, during a business trip to the Soviet Union, he successfully defended his Doctor of Science thesis and was the first Doctor of Science thesis on basic science by Vietnamese people studying in the country. and defended in the Soviet Union.
After that, he continued to teach at the Department of Mathematics, Hanoi National University of Education, and held many positions: Head of the geometry department, dean of the mathematics department, and principal of the school. Hanoi National University of Education (1967 - 1975), Deputy Minister of Education, now the Ministry of Education and Training (1976-1989). In 2004, he retired after his retirement and continued to teach and research mathematics until 2006.
Besides his research and teaching career, he has compiled and published published 8 scientific articles along with 26 books and more than 650 articles on education.
