At the age of 16, People's Artist Tuong Vi joined the army and became a nurse at Military Medical Institute 108. In 1956, she transferred to the dance troupe of the General Political Department and began to study vocal music.
In 1962, she passed the exam. She entered the vocal department at the Hanoi Conservatory of Music and graduated in 1967. After that, she also attended a short composition class organized by the Ministry of Culture and Information. In 1974, she studied for 4 years at the Sofia Conservatory, Bulgaria.
