One of the first, ergodic 20th century scientists to solve a problem that has troubled the science of statistics for many years. He was also President of the American Mathematical Society from 1925 to 1926.
He was the first to provide a proof for a theorem that the Poincare mathematicians had shown years earlier, and the solution. His work brought him instant acclaim in the scientific community.
