Winner of the 1951 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for discovering plutonium and transuranium, which are heavier than uranium. He was also Chairman of the United States Atomic Energy Commission from 1961 to 1971.
He helped develop the atomic bomb, but co-signed a letter to Franklin Roosevelt urging him to demonstrate space gas for the Japanese rather than using it on them; and spent his entire career advocating for the peaceful use of atomic energy.
