An American physical chemist who won the 1985 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his work in analyzing crystal structure. He was also president of the American Chimpanzee Society in 1972 and was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 1976.
He worked with his wife on the Manhattan Project, where they helped develop the first atomic bomb. first in World War II.
