A chemist and former president of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute found a potential source of life in his work with RNA. He was elected to the Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1988, a year after he was elected to the US National Academy of Sciences.
He and his research associate, Sidney Altman, won the 1989 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for their discovery of the catalytic properties of RNA.
