He began his entertainment career in his late teens, performing with the Globe Theater playing the San Diego troupe. He made his television debut in an episode of the late 1950s and early 1960s series 77 Sunset Strip.
He grew up in San Diego, California, the son of Victor Francis Buono and Myrtle Belle Keller. His maternal grandmother, Myrtle Glied, performed on the Vaudeville circuit and encouraged his first interest in acting.
