Neo-traditional architect and urban planner who criticized modernist theories and was influenced by the New Urbanization movement. One of his most recognized projects is the ongoing development of Poundbury, the urban expansion to Dorchester.

He only studied architecture for a year at the University of Stuttgart in Germany before leaving to work in the London firm of James Stirling. He then taught for 20 years at the Architectural Association and the Royal College of Art, refusing to build in part because of his opposition to modernism.
