He fought in World War II before studying architecture at the University of Liverpool. He was first a member of the Black Watch, then the Parachute Regiment, which put him behind enemy lines before D-Day. He and the famous Colin Rowe were classmates in Liverpool.
He was born in Glasgow, although the year of his birth is disputed. He and the renowned architect Colin St John Wilson were lifelong friends. His family attended Quarry Bank High School, Liverpool, England.
