Dao Thien Hai is a Vietnamese chess master, he is the first Vietnamese player to compete with a world chess master Garry Kasparov. Currently, Dao Thien Hai is on the list of 100 chess masters in the world. Dao Thien Hai's highest Elo is 2609, he is in 4th place in the top Vietnamese grandmasters.
Dao Thien Hai won the gold medal in the fast chess tournament at the 2006 Asian Games. At the Mind Sports World Intellectual Championship held in Beijing - China in October 2008, Dao Thien Hai and Le Kieu Thien Kim won medals in the men's and women's doubles chess category. Also in 2008, by winning 6.5 points/9 games at the World Chess Olympiad, Doan Thien Hai helped Vietnam enter the Top 10 Chess Olympiads.
In 2009, Dao Thien Hai ranked second in the first-class chess tournament in Vietnam. In 2011, Dao Thien Hai won the national chess championship. In 2012, he was a player who helped Vietnam rise to 7th place in the Men's Team Championship at the 2012 World Chess Olympiad. At the Asian Team Championship in April 2016, Dao Thien Hai and his teammates brought home two medals. silver medal in two events, fast and lightning.
