For co-founder and leading women for Peace, a Northern Irish communal activist organization that was later renamed Communities for People Peace, Maguire has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
She joined her national movement for peace after her niece and two nieces were killed in a pedestrian car accident involving an Irish on-the-run member Republican Provisional Army. Tragically, the children's mother (Mairead Corrigan's sister Anne) committed suicide after this event.

Before becoming an activist, she worked at the Guinness Brewery and spent her time volunteering for a Catholic service organization called the Legion of Mary.

In early 1980, she and her husband Jackie Maguire (who was formerly married to her late sister, Anne) welcomed sons named John Francis and Luke.
