Bernstein graduated from Montgomery Blair High School in Silver Spring, Maryland. He later attended the University of Maryland but did not graduate. He began his journalism career at the age of 16 when he became a columnist for The Washington Star and was quickly promoted, however he was considered an unofficial member of the newspaper without a university degree. In 1965, he became a full-time reporter for New Jersey's Elizabeth Daily, where he won the first New Jersey press association award for his investigative reporting. In 1966, Bernstein left New Jersey and began working for the Washington Post, where he worked as an editor for local news and became known as one of the newspaper's finest text stylists.
In 1977, Bernstein left the Washington Post, where he took the time to begin investigating a secret relationship between the CIA and the American media during the Cold War and spent a year researching the latter's articles. 25,000-word article published in Rolling Stone. He then began working for ABC News. From the 1980s to 1984, Bernstein became a senior reporter; in 1982, he worked for ABC's Nightline and left the newspaper after two years, continuing to write books and memoirs for many newspapers and other magazines such as The New Republic, New York Times, ..

Bernstein was married three times, his first marriage to Carol Honsa a Washington Post reporter took place in 1968, they split in 1972. In 1976, he remarried to the writer and director. href="/job/playwright/nora-ephron/av8e">Nora Ephron they have two children together, Jacob Bernstein and Max Bernstein. This marriage ended in 1980, he currently lives in New York with his third wife Christine Kuehbeck married since 2003.
