From a young age, he loved music. At the age of 12, he studied guitar in Hawaii (Ha Uyen) with teacher Tran Dinh Khue. After three months he was able to perform with him on French radio. He then studied guitar with a Frenchman and began performing at teahouses and charity shows with these two instruments.
In 1944, Nguyen Thien To married Ha Tien. Ha Tien is the Christian girl in his first composition "Silent Church". However, at first, the love between Nguyen Thien To and Ha Tien was not accepted by her family because of the religious divide. After much convincing the family, they finally got together.
