In 1946, the People's Artist enlisted in the army and became the National Guard during the resistance war against the French. He was always active, enthusiastically participated in campaigns in the inter-zone 5 battlefield and achieved excellent results in combat.
In 1952, Nguyen Van Thong began to engage in art as the secretary cum leader of the Military Literature Union of Inter-Region V.
