Richard Engel is an American journalist, writer and chief foreign correspondent for NBC News. Engel was the first recipient of the Medill Medal for courage in his journalistic duties reporting on the "War Zone Diary".
With his fluency in Arabic, Spanish, and Italian, he is a journalist known for his articles on the Iraq wars, "Arab Spring" and the Syrian civil war. Along with that, he wrote many books about his experiences in the wars he went through such as:

Young / Before famous

Engel grew up in the UES (Upper East Side) neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City, then attended Riverdale National School, after graduating he went on to attend Stanford University. There, he wrote several articles for The Stanford Daily and a summer unpaid internship at CNN Business News in New York City. In 1996, he graduated from Stanford University with a bachelor's degree in International Relations.
After graduating from Stanford, Engel left Cairo and worked as a freelance journalist in Cairo for four years. With that, he became a Middle East correspondent for "The World" and produced from 2001 to 2003 for BBC World Service, Public Radio International (PRI) and WGBH-Boston radio. He also worked as a presenter for USA Today, Reuters, AFP and Jane's Defense Weekly channels.
In 2003, he officially joined NBC news as the main reporter on the Iraq war in Baghdad. . In May 2006, he became Senior Correspondent in the Middle East he assumed his role as Senior Middle East Correspondent. In April 2008, he became the Chief Foreign Correspondent of NBC News.

Engel was married to a Stanford graduate student at Stanford, but the two divorced in 2005. In May 2015, Engel married producer Mary Forrest. and has a son who was born in September 2015.
