An author best known for his Castaways grandfather of the Flying Dutch trilogy and his Redwall series, he also wrote several collections of short stories, including Seven Strange Tales and Spooky (1991) and The Ribbajack & Other Curious Yarns ( 2004).
He left school at age fifteen to sign up for sea merchants, and his experience later inspired some of his literary work.
 
 

Young / Before famous

At the age of ten, he wrote a story about a bird cleaning the teeth of a crocodile and was punished by his teacher, who thought he must have stolen the story idea. Years later (in 1986), he published the first book in his popular Redwall series.
