He studied journalism at the University of Kansas at Lawrence and went on to receive his MA through a teaching fellowship at Purdue University.
He had a very trying childhood; He was twice struck by lightning during his teen years, once the escape was swept a mile downstream in a flood, and his mother killed him when he was in fifth grade.
