Major General Mai Van Cuong was called to the army on March 28, 1959, was a soldier of Company 11, Regiment 68, Division 304. sent to study at the Military Medical School of Regiment 57, Division 304.
In July 1960, after completing the course, he returned to his unit and worked as a nurse at Company 11, Regiment 68, Division 304.
In July 1961, he was one of the first people sent to learn to fly MiG-17 aircraft at the Soviet Air Force School
Day 23 /August 1964, he was admitted to the Communist Party of Vietnam and officially became a Party member on May 23, 1965.
He was awarded the rank of an aircraft pilot in October 1964, belonging to the Vietnamese Communist Party. unit of the 921st Airborne Regiment, Air Defense Service.
In September 1965, he was once again sent to study MiG-21 flight training at the Soviet Air Force School.
After a year of study, he returned to work as an officer in the 921st Airborne Regiment, Air Defense Service, in June 1966.
He was promoted to lieutenant colonel. Captain of Company 1, Red Star Air Force Regiment - 921st Airborne Regiment in May 1968.
In 1969 he was conferred the title Hero of the People's Armed Forces. p>
