Le Thanh Dao was one of 16 pilots who achieved ace level during the war in Vietnam with the record of shooting down 6 American planes. Served in the 927th Fighter Regiment, Vietnam People's Air Force with expertise in flying MiG-21 aircraft. He enlisted in the army in July 1963 as a deputy anti-tank commander of the 85mm type.
In 1965 he was one of the soldiers who was sent to study flying at the Union Air Force School. Soviet Union.
After completing the course in April 1968, he returned home and joined the combat service in the Red Star Fighter Aviation Regiment.
The battle on December 18, 1971 he shot down an F-4D aircraft piloted by pilot Johnson.

On July 24, 1972, he continued to shoot down an F-4 KQHK.

With his achievements, Le Thanh Dao was conferred the title of Hero of the People's Armed Forces by the state in 1973.
